My Story

Welcome!  Come on in and make yourself comfortable.  I’d love to get to know you.

I’m a self proclaimed “late bloomer”, growing up I was more social than athletic.   A single mom with 3 kids and a full time career I just recently discovered my athletic side.   After a cycling tour thru Vermont in 2007, I fell in love with cycling.  Then in August 2008 my sister and I did a Sprint Triathlon and while training for that, the running part was just an evil necessity but one that I have grown to love.   Now over a year later and numerous 5 & 10k’s behind me, I’m hooked.  I set a goal to run a 5k or 10k every month in 2009 and am happy to say that I have met that goal!

On February 7, 2010 I ran my first Half Marathon!  I trained for 15 weeks and am happy to say that I ran my best that day and finished in 2:33.  It was an amazing experience and I am looking forward to doing another in the Fall of 2010.

I delivered my 3rd child at the age of 36 and battled my weight for about 8 years.  Over this past year, running has helped me to learn to love my body, be good to it and it will be good to you.  Now, at the age of 44 I don’t count calories but am AWARE of what I’m putting into my body.  Aware of what is in it, where it came from and how my body will react to what I’m feeding it.  When I stopped worrying about it and just treating myself better, the weight took care of itself.   I believe that you also must feed your soul, LIVE life, LAUGH alot (even at yourself) and LOVE like there’s no tomorrow.

A few years ago I became Vegetarian.  At that time in my life all that meant was that I didn’t eat meat.  Having replaced meat with lots of refined carbs and little vegetables I put on weight and eventually went back to eating meat.  Lately, I’ve been doing alot of reading on the subject, my current favorite is Thrive .   I have incorporated many new foods into my diet and begun eliminating those that are not good for me or the environment.  It’s a personal choice that has made a huge difference in the way I view food.  At this point I am probably 90% vegetarian and working toward 100%.

Enough about me,  let me introduce you to my kids.  Jessica my oldest daughter is 22 and recently enlisted in the Navy.  She will leave for boot camp sometime around June.  Travis my only son whom we all call “Brother”  is 20 and the gentlest soul on the planet.  Then there’s Makenna the little Leo in our home, she is 9 and keeps us on our toes (send help!).  Honestly there is not a dull moment when she’s around.  Together we are a family and home is our “soft” spot where we can be ourselves.  I’m glad your here… hope you’ll stay awhile.

I loved reading this Berni! I think I remember that you were running a 5K and 10K every month in 2009 – what a fun goal and how awesome that you are almost there.

I’m glad to “meet” the family too and read more about your journey towards health and wellness. I could not agree more that it’s all about living, laughing and loving! 😀

I am also very new to running and as much as it’s a love/hate relationship right now I have hope!
maybe we can cheer each other on! well…maybe you can give me some tips!

Cindy, you are right, my blog did change! Ali convinced me to take the PLUNGE into WP! I’m still learning my way around but so far am happy I did it.

What a great story…….Love your mottos about “I believe that you also must feed your soul, LIVE life, LAUGH alot (even at yourself) and LOVE like there’s no tomorrow.” Love that. I too have a copy of Thrive-made some good recipes out of it. I am about 90 % vegan and feel better when I am 100%.
